Peet previews Salford

  • Matt Peet gave his thoughts ahead of Sunday’s Betfred Super League tie against Salford Red Devils.
  • Peet: “We’re expecting the best of Salford, they’re very competitive, they have attacking threats across the field and we know that it’ll be a test.”

Matt Peet gave his thoughts on this weekend’s opposition in his weekly press conference on Friday afternoon.

Reflecting on the Easter Weekend results for his side, Peet said: “It’s not what we wanted. We wanted two wins and two high quality performances. I thought we showed glimpses in the first game, we learnt some lessons and I thought we started to implement some things against Wakefield, but realistically that was a standalone fixture – Easter Monday.

“It was a very professional performance but we’ve had time now to take stock, look at both games, particularly the St Helens game and there’s some clear areas where we need to be better. One is intensity and quality for longer periods, so we need to show that in other games, that we don’t take the foot off the gas and lose that intensity. In general, our starts have been pretty good but we need to be better for longer.”

Looking at this week’s opposition, Salford Red Devils, he said: “We saw in the last game here that it was a tight affair. There is a bit of local pride at stake when Salford come here, they always put in a proud performance and I don’t think many of those games have been blowout scores by a long way.

“We’re expecting the best of Salford, they’re very competitive, they have attacking threats across the field and we know that it’ll be a test but really it’s about us improving. We say it every week, but regardless of who we play and what form they are in – we have to be better. We have areas of the game that we need to nail, and if we do that it’ll help us get wins.”

Following an injury to Tommy Leuluai on Good Friday, as well as a suspension for Sam Powell, Peet was keen to take the positives with a chance to utilise his squad depth: “We always knew that the squad was going to be tested, particularly around this time of year. Harry (Smith) and Brad (O’Neill), the timing of it you can probably predict. They’ve been patient most of the time, they’ve been working hard, playing in different teams but they both get a crack and they’re here for a reason and that is to contribute to the team. We don’t expect any momentum to slow down, we want to improve whoever is in the team.”

Finally, following the recent announcement that Zak Hardaker has left the Club, he added: “I do hope that he gets himself on track and gets sorted with another Club. We all know that Zak can play so I genuinely wish him all the best, but as far as Wigan goes, it isn’t to be.”
