Wigan fan to run 70km in 7 days for Rob

A lifelong Wigan Warriors fan is set to begin a seven-day running challenge today in aid of Leeds Rhinos legend Rob Burrow and MND Association.

Graham Berry, 48, from Ashton-in-Makerfield, Wigan, is undertaking a 70km challenge as he aims to run for a minimum of 10k each day for the next seven days.

Inspired by Kevin Sinfield’s 7 in 7 challenge in December, Graham has already raised over £730 for the cause and is set to smash his second target of £777 as he starts his first run at 7pm tonight.

Graham, who has planned all of his routes around the Midlands – where he now lives, revealed he only took up an interest in running when he lost a huge seven stone because of it.

He said: “I only got into running three and half years ago. I was 21 and a half stone and I lost a lot of weight off the back of it. I lost seven stone. I’m now a keen runner – I’ve ran two London marathons.

“I followed Kevin Sinfield’s story – he was so inspirational. Watching him run for seven consecutive days takes some doing. I wanted to do something myself so I decided to sign up.

Graham will wear a special ‘Burrow 7’ shirt ever day when running on his 7 in 7 challenge.

“I’ve been running 40-50 miles a week to prepare for it. I try to go on runs four times a week anyway.

“I’ve always said fitness running is a phycological challenge – it’s about having your head in gear and having a good mental health. My head is telling me I’m going to do it. I know I can do it. I’m itching to get going.”

CCTV engineer Graham, who plays touch Rugby League with Telford Raiders, started supporting Wigan when he was 11-year-old and he revealed he played with former player Bobbie Goulding when the pair were at amateur Rugby League club Widnes Tigers together in 1982.

With just a few hours to go until he embarks on the challenge, Graham expressed his gratitude to all the support he has received from the Rugby League community so far.

“Most of my supporters have come from the Rugby League community. My family and friends have been great. I’m so grateful for all the funds that have been raised so far for such a great cause. Initially, I set a target of £200, it’s now over £700!”
