Peet: No excuses

Matt Peet credited Huddersfield and said his side had ‘no excuses’ after falling short against Huddersfield Giants on Thursday night.

“We had times where we were close but ultimately whenever we were set-for-set Huddersfield looked the stronger team in collision. They played more fluent than us, so credit to them,” he said.

“All our team are full time professionals, they train together day-in, day-out since the start of pre-season so there’s no excuses.”

Despite the result, Peet did praise the efforts of some of his younger players: “Some of the young lads will benefit from it, I think everyone needs to learn from tonight. I thought Logan and Matty both stood up well and James McDonnell had some glimpses, they will be better for the experience, but I also thought they didn’t look out of place.”

On Matty Nicholson, who scored a double on debut: “We know the capabilities Matthew has got, he has a good rugby sense. He carried strong when he was on, hopefully we see more of Matthew. Credit to Newcastle and the work they’ve done with him, Eamon O’Carroll, Denis Betts – he is in their system more than he’s in ours so it shows the benefit of what they’ve been doing with him.”

Peet also spoke about Logan Astley who made his debut at half back this evening: “I am happy with Logan’s progression, the way he trains and I thought he showed tonight that he handled it physically which with Logan being a young half back would be anyone’s concern. I have every confidence in throwing him in again, we all think a lot of him, he’s building nicely and he’ll certainly be better and more confidence from tonight.”

Finalising, Peet said: “We need to have a good talk about tonight, we need to learn a lot. We’ll have a catch up with the lads tomorrow, we’ll have some good discussions and learning points. We’ve got to learn some lessons because some of the things we did tonight were below par.”
