We take a closer look at ‘Anthem for the North’ singer Joe Astley.
The singer’s track featured on Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic’s joint statement.
- Astley: “To have my home town’s football and rugby team on my side sending out that exact message is really something else.”
Following the joint statement released by Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic, we take a closer look at the man behind the track ‘Anthem for the North’.
Yesterday’s message of ‘We are Wigan’ was accompanied by a video showing some of the best moments in the history of both clubs.
Local artist Joe Astley provided the music for the video, with his latest single ‘Anthem for the North’ setting the scene perfectly.

We need to look after each other more than ever and as the town’s proudest sporting teams we’re speaking you today to say that we’re with you.

The Wigan singer-songwriter released his first song back in December, with ‘Revolution Postponed’ picking up radio play on local stations across the North West.
‘Anthem for the North’ has performed similarly well, and will be included in his debut album which is due for release later this year.
“The support has been amazing,” says Astley. “I believe in Northerners, we are one. We’re in this together now and we need to look after one another in these uncertain times. To have my home town’s football and rugby team on my side sending out that exact message is really something else.”
The track has also received support from Wigan Today, BBC Radio Merseyside and Wigan athlete Jenny Meadows.
“When I got a message off Wigan Warriors saying they wanted to use it, I was just elated, because it’s the exact message I wanted to send across,” he added.
Anthem for the North is available to stream now.
