  • O’Loughlin: “For us to come and hopefully put a smile on a couple of the kids’ faces before they go on to have operations is great, and hopefully they get a bit of enjoyment out of it as well.”

Four Wigan Warriors first team players visited Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust’s Rainbow Ward on Wednesday to spread some festive cheer.

Sean O’Louhlin, Oliver Gildart, Joe Greenwood and Bevan French all posed for pictures with fans, signed autographs and chatted with the young patients and staff all in the hope of spreading a bit of Christmas cheer, a week before the big day.

Loaded with Christmas selection boxes and club merchandise, the players took some time out to visit some of the children who are staying at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary this December.

Captain O’Loughlin said: “For us to come and hopefully put a smile on a couple of the kids’ faces before they go on to have operations is great, and hopefully they get a bit of enjoyment out of it as well.

“Around Christmas you expect all the happy and merry side of things, but there are some people who are going through tough times. The kids get on with it though and they’ve all got smiles on their faces.”

He added: “All the boys are sympathetic to the situations here, but my little girl has been on the ward and I’ve experienced how good the staff are and how much hard work they all put in.

“Anything you can do to show some appreciation at this time of the year, especially, is a real privilege.”

Paediatric Sister for the Rainbow Ward, Heather Dineley, said: “We’re really grateful to the players for giving up their time to come and see the children and families on the ward.

“The children were so excited to meet them and have been enjoying opening their lovely presents. It’s certainly spread a bit of festive cheer.”
