The Wigan Warriors Scholarship programme welcomed the latest set of recruits on Monday night.

The evening, designed to give the new first year’s a better understanding of their future scholarship, featured presentations from scholarship staff as well as conversations with scholarship graduates to give an insight on their experiences.

From coaching to education, welfare to strength and conditioning, the new recruits were provided with a detailed evening of presentations to prepare them for the year ahead.

The evening included a presentation from Wigan Warriors first team Head Coach Adrian Lam. The ex-player turned-coach described to the new first-years the importance of Youth development at Wigan Warriors, how proud the traditions are in the Club and highlighted that 43 players from the scholarship have progressed through the academy system in the last seven years to make Super League debuts.

Some of those players were in attendance on the evening also, on hand to describe their experiences of the Scholarship and how it proved vital in their development into the U19s and beyond.

Alex Sutton, Morgan Smithies and Oliver Gildart.

Academy player Alex Sutton discussed his development in gaining a spot in the U19s, Morgan Smithies spoke about his experiences of breaking into the first team in 2019 and Oliver Gildart offered his experiences of starting off in the scholarship and going on to win trophies and international caps.

On the importance of the evening, Scholarship Manager Anthony Atherton: “It was great to welcome our new recruits to the club and see last year’s players back from their summer breaks. The opportunity for them to all get together and share the first step on their journey with their family, friends, community coaches and teachers make it a fantastic evening and a highlight of the calendar.

“We use the evening to highlight the importance of the players feeling supported on their journey and look to showcase the depth of that support, with presentations from key members of the team including Head Coach, Head of S&C, Physio, Leadership Coach, Education Mentor, Head of Welfare, this punctuates the expectancies we have of the players, the network they have to help them develop and how this is the first step on a long term journey.”
