Women bow out of cup

  • Match report as Wigan Warriors Women suffer defeat against St Helens Women in the Coral Challenge Cup.

  • Full-time: St Helens Women 32-0 Wigan Warriors Women.

  • Hosts score seven unanswered tries to knock the Warriors out of the competition.

Wigan Warriors Women were knocked out of the Coral Challenge Cup as they suffered a quarter final derby defeat to St Helens at the Totally Wicked Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

St Helens opened the scoring in the 9th-minute, as Jodie Cunningham cut out a pass out to the left wing and Leah Burke was on hand to go over in the corner. Faye Gaskin missed the extras but Saints had a 4-0 advantage.

The home side continued to ask questions of the Wigan defence, and they got their reward in the 17th-minute, this time Lizzie Gladman barging her way over after a long stoppage in play. Gaskin was on target with the extras and Saints were 10-0 up.

St Helens started to take control as Zoe Harris found a route through on the right hand side. Gaskin converted to put the hosts 16-0 up.

Emily Rudge then put Saints further in front in the 51st-minute, with a good individual effort seeing her skip past a number of Wigan defenders to touch down under the uprights. Gaskin was again on target and the hosts led 22-0.

Wigan were on the back foot again as St Helens continued to drive into their half, this time Tara Jones diving over from close range to take Saints out of reach.

Burke then went over on the overlap for her second of the afternoon, making it 32-0 to St Helens.

The hosts confirmed their spot in the semi final as Burke completed her hat-trick in the 76th-minute, latching onto another pass on the overlap to go in at the left corner to confirm the 36-0 final score.

The Warriors face Wakefield Trinity Women on the road in the next round of the Women’s Super League.
