  • Morgan Smithies looks ahead to Wigan’s Betfred Super League game vs Castleford Tigers

  • “It’s just up to us middles to control the game.”

  • Wigan Warriors vs Castleford Tigers, Saturday 27th April, kick-off 5:15pm

Wigan must avoid repeating past mistakes on Saturday when they host Castleford Tigers at the DW Stadium, according to forward Morgan Smithies.

The 18 year-old, who made his debut against Catalans Dragons back in March, has now made 5 appearances for the Cherry & Whites.

After being part of a 41-0 thrashing of Catalans at the DW Stadium, Smithies second outing was a 38-28 loss to the Tigers, something that he wants to avoid this weekend.

“They are going to come through the middle like last time. It’s just up to us middles to control the game and control their pack.

“We need to sort our defence out, we need to have a start like we did at Salford, just fire straight into them and control the middles.”

The 18 year-old also explained how playing at home will help the players in comparison to playing away at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle. He said, “There’s nothing better, it’s a surreal feeling when all of the home fans are there.”

Smithies, who was a last minute replacement for the injured Club Captain Sean O’Loughlin on Easter Monday, linked up with fellow academy player Amir Bourouh, who made his debut for the first team against Salford.

On the win vs Salford: “We were desperate for the win and we worked really hard to get it. It wasn’t the best performance and there is still a lot of improvements we can work on but we were just happy to get the win.

On playing alongside Amir Bourouh: “Yeah I played with him at Siddal. I think he joined at U12s and I even went to the same school as him. I was chuffed for him.”
