Warriors lose to Saints

  • Match report as Wigan lose opening Super League game of the season against rivals St Helens 22-12

  • Despite coming from 12-0 behind in the first half, two Saints tries after the break send the Warriors home empty handed

  • Tries from Flower and Marshall was not enough to earn Lam opening day victory

Wigan began the new Super League season with a 22-12 defeat at the hands of rivals St Helens at the Totally Wicked stadium.

After going in at the break level (12-12), two unanswered tries for Saints in the second half inflicted defeat onto Adrian Lam’s side.

St Helens got the game, and the season, off to a fast start as Kevin Naiqama put his side ahead in the second minute of the derby, with Percival converting the kick to make it 6-0.

That lead was then doubled, Dom Peryoux running through the Wigan defence and assisting Jonny Lomax in the 15th minute.

Justin Holbrook’s side then nearly added a third try in the 23rd minute, but a last grasp tackle from Dan Sarginson to push Makinson into touch kept the score at 12-0.

Wigan thought they had managed to grab one back, but celebrations was cut short with Joe Greenwood’s pass to Sarginson being forward.

The first try for Lam’s side did follow not to long after, Ben Flower powering his way over in the 28th minute.

Eight minutes later the Warriors added a second to level the scores, with a passing error from Saints new signing, Lachlan Coote, allowing Liam Marshall to easily run 80 metres to dive over to make things even at the break.

Like in the first, Saints started the second half brighter, Regan Grace diving over in the corner ten minutes after the break to put his side back in front, but Wigan still only trailed by four point after Percival missed the conversion.

After surviving a series of St Helens attacks, Wigan began to mount pressure of their own.

Just as the Warriors seemed to be growing back into the game, a number of errors allowed Saints to survive unscathed and to head up the pitch to go over once again.

The try by James Roby’s in the 84th minute sealed a 22-12 defeat for Adrian Lam in his first Super League game in charge.
