Gildart: It's good to be back

  • Oliver Gildart talks about his first week in pre-season.

  • Centre is relishing 2019 under new Head Coach Adrian Lam.

  • Gildart: “The lads have turned up hungry for more and that’s the mentality we need to have if we are to get our hands on that silverware again.”

Oliver Gildart says pre-season is ‘going well’ after the England international returned to Club duty last week.

Four weeks after picking up his second Grand Final Winners medal, the centre featured in England’s 2-1 Test series win against New Zealand in November.

Along with fellow international players Sean O’Loughlin, George Williams, Joe Greenwood, Morgan Escaré and Romain Navarrete, Gildart is now back with the Warriors as preparations continue for the 2019 season under Adrian Lam.

Gildart said: “It’s been tough. I’ve been back for a week now and I’m blowing off the cobwebs. It’s good to finally get back in and be around the boys again.

“He’s (Lam) been really good. I had a couple of chats with him before I went away on holiday and he told me what his plans were, so I had a rough idea what to expect.

“I’ve been on the field with him a few times now and it’s going well. He’s got his own ideas with new plays and calls.”

Gildart scored a debut try for England against New Zealand in October.

Although he is a few weeks behind in pre-season, Gildart believes he isn’t too far away, physically.

He added: “The boys are looking really good. They’re all fit and strong in the gym. It’s on me to catch up to where they are, but I’m not that far behind, fitness wise, as I’ve been ticking it over in the off-season and I should be good to go for Round One against St Helens.”

After a whirlwind 2018, the 22-year-old is determined to write more history and make next season another to remember.

“To get to the Grand Final and win in the way we did was so special. We spoke about the fact that no Wigan team has ever won the Super League back-to-back, so it’s something we’ve set ourselves as the main target for next year.

“The lads have turned up hungry for more and that’s the mentality we need to have if we are to get our hands on that silverware again.”
