Tomkins on Dragons game

  • Tomkins not phased by playing future club Catalans on Friday

  • The full-back is aiming to leave Wigan on a high with a Grand Final Win

  • Game a ‘must win’ for second spot heading into the Super 8s.

Sam Tomkins has only one thing on his mind going into Friday’s fixture with his future club Catalans - making his final season at Wigan a success.

The in-form full-back, who agreed to join Catalans earlier this season, was speaking ahead of the home fixture against the Dragons this Friday.

On facing his future club Tomkins said: “My focus is finishing as strongly as possible wearing a Wigan jersey. It doesn’t matter where I’m playing next year, I don’t see [Catalans] as my team yet.”

He also made it evident how important it was signing off the regular season in victory. He said “It’s a must win, we want that second spot going into the two-week break.

“We’d like to finish first but that’s not looking likely so the next best is where we are now.”

Catalans have finished the season strongly, winning 10 of their last 13 games in all competitions. Tomkins made it clear that the Wigan squad know they will be a challenge on Friday.

“Catalans have been playing really well, some of the best rugby they’ve played in a long, long while. They’ve got threats right across the field.”

“I’m happy they are still in Super League, I just hope they don’t play well this week.”

He also made it clear that ex-Wiganer Michael McIlorum has been key to the opponents recent successes.

“He’s been Catalans best player over the last 6 months when they’ve had this great run of form so he’s certainly inspiring people to play well there. There’s no one that works harder in a game in this league than Micky.”

Wigan host Catalans Dragons at the DW Stadium on Friday, 8pm kick-off. Tickets are available starting from £22 for adults, £16 for concessions with juniors from £10. Members are entitled to £2 off adult tickets and £1 off concession and junior tickets.
