SUMMARY

Wigan Women booked their spot in The Challenge Cup Semi Finals as they beat Featherstone Rovers away from home in an arm wrestle of a match.

The Warriors fell to a 12-0 deficit early on, before Walsh and Goodburn brought Wigan back up to speed, but Wigan went in 12-10 down at half time. The second half saw a different side to the Warriors though, as they ran in seven tries in the final forty to secure the win and their place in the draw for the Semi Final.

Gemma Walsh returned to the fold for Wigan’s Quarter Final, coming back in at loose forward with Charlotte Foley picking up at 6. Vanessa Temple also came back into the starting line-up, with a number of the Wigan team yet to miss a game. Featherstone named a similar team to the one who were defeated by Wigan last week, Chelsea Senior coming in for Kayleigh Bulman and Sarah Barford also coming into the starting line-up.

FIRST HALF

It was a tough start for the Warriors, finding themselves giving penalties away on numerous occasions in the opening eight minutes, the yards allowing Featherstone to go over in the 9th minute through Brogan Churm, with a successful conversion the hosts led 6-0. Featherstone got over again in the 12th minute, this time Dobson finding her way through to go over under the sticks, the conversion successful again for 12-0 Featherstone. Wigan crashed over in the 17th minute to get on the score sheet, Gemma Walsh with an individual effort, cutting back inside to race over. The conversion attempt was short and Featherstone led 12-4. Hannah Goodburn went over for Wigan in the 24th minute, latching onto a short pass from Charlotte Foley to get the score. Foley took over the kicking and it was good to make it Featherstone 12-10 Wigan. Wigan had a few chances against the line, but Featherstone held firm to get the turnovers and Wigan couldn’t get into the lead.

SECOND HALF

Wigan made an emphatic start to the second period, Sarah Harrison breaking the line before setting Sibbald on her way to crash over. Foley added the extras in front of the uprights and Wigan had the lead for the first time in the match at 16-12. Rachel Thompson extended the lead just two minutes later, bursting through the line and racing 60m to go under the sticks, Foley converted for 22-12 in Wigan’s favour. Featherstone got themselves back in it on 50 minutes though, a flat pass to Churm allowing her to barge over for the score, the conversion good for 22-18 Wigan. A great effort from Wigan though, forcing an error in the 56th minute before pouncing on the mistake for Thompson to double her tally, the conversion was wide. Wigan were over again in the 58th minute, this time Gemma Walsh sending a kick right, Temple collects and rounds the defence to go in at the corner, the conversion from the touchline not quite there, Wigan led 30-18. Joanie Aspin was the next name to add to the score sheet, the number ten powering through to get the try. Charlotte Foley converted for Wigan 36-18. Burrows got over in the 66th minute, after some good work across to the left for the number 20 to get over. Wigan completed the rout in the 79th minute, Sarah Harrison going in alone to crash over and make it 44-18 to take Wigan to the Semi Finals of The Challenge Cup.
