Gabe Hamlin happy with New South Wales tour experience
Former Rabbitohs forward faces old club at ANZ Stadium
- Youngster eyeing full Wigan debut soon
Close-season recruit Gabe Hamlin said the club’s tour of New South Wales had been a great personal experience.
Hamlin, 21, joined Wigan before the new campaign from South Sydney Rabbitohs.
The Warriors stayed near his family home in Coogee, Sydney, during their week in the City and although Gabe says he enjoyed meeting with friends and family he admitted he’s looking forward to returning to England and making his full debut.
Hamlin said: “It’s definitely brought the boys a lot closer together, we’ve had some good times together which certainly helps build that bond.
“Overall for me it’s been a really good trip. I got to see my family and friends who I’ve not seen for a few months. I’m actually looking forward to getting back to England now though. I’m really enjoying my time at Wigan and keen to get a game against Warrington or another one in the near future.
“I’m just going to keep working on my fitness and try to make sure I’m in good shape in case I get picked then I’m ready to go and make my debut, that’s my next goal.”
Wigan lost out to Hamlin’s former club at ANZ Stadium on Saturday as Adam Doueihi’s late try secured an 18-8 win for Souths.
The Wigan prop believes the Warriors can take a lot from the game though.
“We did a lot of defending in the second half but I think we showed a lot of character.” He said.
“They had a lot of sets on our line and only came away with the one try so I think we can take a lot from that. We kept fighting and fighting and never gave up so I think that’s a bonus.”
