Williams Happy With Points

  • Wigan Warriors half-back George Williams on Wigan’s 28-26 win at Widnes Vikings

  • Warriors fightback from 26-12 down and score four late tries to take the win

  • England international praises Wigan’s left side and reveals he is enjoying playing with Oliver Gildart, Joe Burgess & Liam Farrell

George Williams said it was the points, not the performance, that mattered as Wigan somehow overturned a 14 point second-half deficit to beat Widnes.

Wigan trailed with 20 minutes to go before tries from Joe Burgess (2), Lewis Tierney and Oliver Gildart’s second of the game saw them clinch a remarkable victory.

Speaking to wiganwarriors.com after the game, Williams said: “It was a real good comeback from us.

“It was not the performance we wanted after a hard week but at the end of the day we got the two points and that is all that mattered.

“It was very scratchy from us and it is not what we wanted but we’re still unbeaten this year which is good for us.

“We had a brilliant win last week and the points are the most important things coming out of the game and we can work on what we need to after our video review next week and go into the Leigh game full of confidence.”

The left side was particularly clinical for the Warriors, with centre Gildart and winger Burgess getting two tries each and Liam Farrell also looking a threat throughout.

“Me, Gilly [Oliver Gildart] and Budgie [Joe Burgess] have played with each other since we were 15 so we’ve got a good combination going and we know how each other play inside out.

“It’s good for me having Faz [Liam Farrell] on the left too because I have played with him for three years now and we’ve built up a lot of trust. It’s good that we’re scoring a few tries down the left edge at the minute but we conceded a few tonight as well so we’ll be looking to sort that out this week.”

Williams also paid credit to the Wigan fans after more than 2,000 of them made the journey over to support the team in the re-arranged fixture.

“When we came out to warm-up I was blown away to see the Wigan end full. We always get great support from the fans but tonight was an extra special effort, it was really nice to be able to give them our shirts after the game and to get the two points for them too.”
