Big Test

  • Wigan Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane expecting a big test against Brisbane

  • Wigan to face Brisbane in World Club Series at DW Stadium on Saturday 20 February, 2016

  • ’I’ve had this in my diary for several weeks already, we cannot wait’

Shaun Wane has admitted he cannot wait for his players to test themselves against some of the best players in the world when they face Brisbane Broncos in the 2016 World Club Series.

Wigan will host Brisbane in game two of the series on Saturday 20 February 2016.

Wane says he has already started preparing for what promises to be another great battle between the two teams.

“I’ve had this in my diary for several weeks already,” he said. “It will be a big test for my players and one that we cannot wait for.

“The Brisbane side is packed with talent, the players are excited to pit their wits against the likes of Corey Parker, Sam Thaiday, Darius Boyd and Adam Blair.

“Brisbane had a fine year last year and like ourselves they came very close to winning the title.”

The game is a repeat of the 2015 game when over 20,000 people saw Wigan lose out in Golden Point Extra Time.

Wane thinks last year’s result will only serve to motivate his players.

“Having come so close in the last game against Brisbane I think the players will be desperate to go one step further and get the win.

“We’re already really excited for it, just as the players want to test themselves against the best so do I. To lead a Wigan team out to play against an Australian outfit coached by Wayne Bennett, it really doesn’t get much better.”

Wane himself has a long affinity with the World Club Series games having played for Wigan in the 1987 victory over Manly-Warringah.

The former prop forward said: “I remember everything about that day even now, it’s a special memory and one of the best nights of my career. My players know that this is a special occasion and will be giving it their all to get the win in February.”
