Wigan Warriors Under 19's went down to their first defeat in ten games as St Helens Under 19's ran out 14-12 winners at The Solid Strip Community Stadium.
The match was almost a replica of the First Team encounter that had gone before it on Friday night. The sides were all square at half time as Wigan's Nick Gregson scored just after the 20 minute mark following an earlier effort from Saints' Phil Atherton.
A Lewis Charnock penalty goal gave Saints a narrow lead before Matthew Fleming's try and another goal from Charnock gave them an eight point advantage. Wigan replied late on through Liam Forsyth and were within two points of their rivals but the Warriors couldn't find a winner and Saints just held on.
Warriors Under 19's Coach Matty Peet brought Lewis Tierney back into the starting line-up, the Full Back having played most of his rugby on dual registration at Workington Town this season. Callum Wright started at Hooker after two appearances in First Grade in recent weeks, whilst Ryan Sutton and Rob Lever also returned to help strengthen the side.
The visitors drew first blood after 12minutes as Hooker Matthew Fozard scooted 20 metres from Acting Half and had Phil Atherton in support who slid over the line.
As the game entered the 20th minute Wigan drew level. Helped by a Saints penalty for interference at the play of the ball, the Warriors peppered the defensive line. Wigan needed something different to unlock the door and Ryan Houghton provided it. The Wigan Scrum Half found Nick Gregson on the inside line who went in for the try. Jake Shorrocks added the conversion and we were all level at 6-6.
The sides stood toe to toe as the forwards dominated the game, the wet conditions at Orrell certainly not giving either side much chance to play expansive rugby.
Defence was on top throughout the remainder of the half as they nullified each other for 20 minutes, the referee blowing for half time at 6-6.
It was Saints who forced the issue a little more at the start of the second period, Prop Andre Savelio making several barn-storming runs through the middle. Despite forcing a couple of early drop outs Saints had to settle for just two points as Lewis Charnock added a penalty from 30 metres out. Saints led 8-6 with a little over 20 minutes to play.
The Visitors extended their lead in the 68th minute as Full Back Ricky Bailey found Centre Matthew Fleming who went in from ten metres out. Dave Hewitt added the two points from close to the right touchline and Saints had a 14-6 lead.
In the last minute Wigan's Liam Forsyth barged over the line near the touchline. Jake Shorrocks' conversion went in off the post and the Warriors had one final chance to win it.
Wigan searched desperately for a way through and made good progress up field but a move down the left side went array and Saints held on by the narrowest of margins.
