'Pats' Chairman Says Back the Boys

Wigan St Pats’ Chairman calls for town to back local boys

The chairman of one of the country’s most famous sporting clubs is urging the whole town of Wigan to get behind two local heroes tomorrow when England face Australia in the Gillette Four Nations at DW Stadium.

Wigan St Patricks have continued their proud record of producing players for the national team with full-back Shaun Briscoe and stand-off Sam Tomkins both featuring in England’s starting line tomorrow.

If England win Saturday’s crucial clash they will reach the Gillette Four Nations Final and Bill Atherton, the Chairman of Wigan St Pats, hopes the famously Rugby League-mad town gives Briscoe and Tomkins its full backing.

“It’s a great honour for our club for Sam and Shaun to be in the England team and the whole town of Wigan needs to get right behind them,” said Atherton, who is especially delighted for 19-year-old Wigan Warriors half-back Tomkins.

“It’s about time Sam got his chance and I think he will take it with both hands.

“It’s great to see two local lads in the team and there are quite a few going down from our club. Sam still spends a lot of time down at St Pats and helps out with the Under-18s and Shaun watches the team when we’re over in Hull.

“You could see Sam was special when he came up through the club there has always been something different about him.

“He has always had the potential and that little individual sparkle and unpredictability which you can’t coach into players.”

Wigan St Pats could also have had a third representative tomorrow had not Sean O’Loughlin, the Wigan Warriors captain, not withdrawn from the England squad with a broken thumb.
