Wigan Warriors Head Coach Brian Noble was full of praise for Michael Withers at the club's press conference on Thursday.
The news was confirmed on Wednesday that the popular full back was forced to retire from the game due to a knee injury with immediate effect.
Noble coached Withers at Bradford and brought him to the Warriors at the start of the year.
"It's such a pity we haven't seen the best of Michael here at Wigan, he would have been a real asset. He was itching to get back in the team and we were itching to have him back but unfortunately he has had to succumb. He requires major surgery on the knee and he has decided to pull the pin.
"He wasn't nicknamed the 'Ghost' for nothing,he can slip into a game and win it on his own. He was also a great tactical talker who could make his forwards do all the tackling just by telling them where to be and moving them around the park just like a good full back should. He was also a top bloke and we shall miss him."
Michael had the knee operation on Thursday and everyone at the club wishes him well for the future.
