Behind The Sticks - Round 3

In our regular weekly column Behind the Sticks, the Riversider investigates the Warriors hopes for their game against Huddersfield on Friday.

Wigan Warriors v Huddersfield Giants

Wigan go into Round 3 of Super League XI hoping to avoid defeat, having narrowly lost at Catalans Dragons and at home to Leeds Rhinos. To be fair I could quite easily be writing about two opening round victories rather than losses. That shows just how competitive Super League now is in 2006 where it's just marginal decisions by both players and officials that cost teams two points.

There will no easy ride for the Warriors this Friday night as they entertain an ever-improving Huddersfield Giants side. Jon Sharp has recruited superbly in the off-season; captures include former Bulls favourite Robbie Paul and former Wigan duo Stephen Wild and Martin Aspinwall.

The Giants have made tremendous progress since gaining promotion to Super League in 2002. When you go through their team there are no weak spots any more and in Chris Thorman at stand off they have a tremendous player who Wigan will have to watch closely.

For the Warriors there could be a recall for stand off Danny Orr who missed last week’s heart breaking defeat to the Leeds Rhinos.

Whilst I expect this game to be very competitive I take the Warriors to break their duck and win by around two tries. I take captain Sean O’Loughlin to be the star of the show and maybe even open the scoring.

Enjoy the game and let's hope for another tremendous JJB crowd.

Winning Margin – Wigan to beat Huddersfield Giants by 11-15 points
1st Try Scorer – Sean O’Loughlin
