The Heat is On

The Mayor of Wigan is set to defy temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit later this month when he steps out in support of his chosen charity.

In what is believed to be a north-west 'first' for a serving mayor, Cllr Brian Jarvis is taking part in what organisers hope will be the region's biggest-ever fire-walking event. They want the Wigan public to put their best feet forward and join Brian in Wigan town centre on Saturday 1st October, 1.30pm, in aid of Wigan & Leigh Hospice. People are invited to sponsor the Mayor or enrol to do the walk themselves.

Fire-walking involves walking on hot ashes. Fire-Walk instructor Thomas Wolf says “I have been involved in hundreds of fire-walks and no-one has ever been injured. – all volunteers will be properly trained on the day and I can promise it will be an experience you will always remember.” Wigan's Mayor is determined to put his feet where his mouth is in support of his chosen charity.

Cllr Jarvis explains:

"It's going to be hotter than the council chamber on a Wednesday night and it's a daunting prospect, but it's the cause that counts and I'm sure I'll come through unscathed.

"There can be few organisations that carry out such worthwhile and meaningful work as hospices. The dedication and care they provide is awe-inspiring, and with the support of the great Wigan public we can make sure that Wigan & Leigh Hospice continues to help the people who rely on them most.”

Not only will Wigan Town Centre be on fire this Saturday; it will also be your chance to see one of the most beautiful Ferrari’s ever made, modelled by our very own Max!

The classic Ferrari Red F355, a 380bhp, 170mph flying machine which does 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. It is one of Maranello’s most breathtaking driving machines, cost over £100,000 and is one of the world’s most beautiful sports cars. It is owned by the Three Sisters Race Circuit who are also backing the Mayor’s Charity Appeal by organising a special ‘Team Karting Day’ in the near future. They have agreed to put some of their ‘special’ vehicles on display.

If you think karting is just a few laps around an indoor circuit, then the magnificent racing circuit will open your eyes. It has been the venue for European Karting championships – and some of the karts are a little different to those you may have seen before - such as the 125cc Rotax Max Kart which is a true race kart. Its 125cc engine is massively tuned, so much so that it needs a full re-build every 20 hours! The engine rev's to 15,000rpm and will lap Three Sisters quicker than the Ferrari!!! This incredible machine will also be there on Saturday.

Also on display will be a 320cc Pro Kart. It is one of 20 pro karts that run at Three Sisters. Capable of upto 70mph, this is one of the best ways to experience Three Sisters which is the UK's longest and fastest kart circuit!

All this is in addition to a Viking Re-enactment Group, some of whom will also be fire-walking on Saturday along with Hospice Nurses and others.

Councillor Jarvis added:

“This year we have already had some great events in aid of the Mayor’s Charity. Throughout the year we will continue to arrange some fabulous opportunities where you can enjoy yourself. As well as my fire-walk and the planned Karting Day, another unique night is the STARS IN YOUR EYES concert at the Monaco Ballroom next Wednesday (5th) when, just for you, Europe’s top Ronan Keating, Tina Turner, Madonna, Robbie Williams, Michael Jackson and Roy Orbison tribute artists are performing on the same bill. These artists tour the world individually and this is the only time anywhere in the world you can see them on the same bill! Tribute nights are very popular and this one is unique.”

This year the Mayor’s Charity is Wigan & Leigh Hospice, and you can be assured that all of your donations will be properly, and locally used.

Hospice Communications Officer, Edwin Matthews said:

“There is no doubt that this Mayoral Year will bring some tremendous events to the Borough and with great diversity. This is possible thanks to the support of people like The Galleries Shopping Centre who have sponsored the Fire-Walk; and 3 Sisters Racing Circuit who are sponsoring the Karting Day.” He continued “If you come to STARS IN YOUR EYES at the Monaco, you will have the unique opportunity of bidding in a special auction on the night for one of the ‘team’ places (between 3-5 drivers)at the planned Karting Day.”
