  • Captain Sean O’Loughlin amongst six different scorers.

  • Lam’s side scored three tries either side of half-time to claim victory.

Wigan Warriors moved to within two points of fourth place in the Betfred Super League on Friday after beating Huddersfield Giants 38-22 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Adrian Lam’s side scored three tries either side of the break, through Chris Hankinson, Sean O’Loughlin, Liam Marshall, Joe Burgess, Tommy Leuluai and George Williams.

The Cherry and Whites are now level on points (18) with fifth placed Salford Red Devils, who they play at the DW Stadium on Friday, and two points off Catalans Dragons, who are currently fourth.

The Warriors took a 0-6 lead with seven minutes play, as Hankinson made a darting run through a gap in the Giants defence to go over, before converting the kick himself to get the additional two.

Huddersfield soon equalised as Innes Senior broke down the wing and passed the ball inside for Sam Hewitt to get the try. Lee Gaskell added the two to make it 6-6 after 11 minutes.

Seven minutes later, Wigan retook the lead, as O’Loughlin stretched his arm out to ground the ball for his first try of the season. Hankinson added the two to make it 6-12

The visitors found more space later on in the half, as Hankinson passed the ball to Marshall on the right, who cut inside to go over, with the former making it 6-18 with the boot.

With four minutes of the half remaining, Huddersfield pulled a try back, as Matt Frawley forced his way over. Gaskell successfully converted again and Wigan’s lead was narrowed to 18-12 at half-time.

Just five minutes after the break, the Warriors extended their lead, as space opened up down the left for Burgess to go over, making it 22-12. After missing the kick, Hankinson soon corrected things as he converted a penalty to add an extra two points for his side.

In the 54th-minute, Wigan went over again, with Leulaui getting on the end of a quick series of passes to go over. Hankinson added the extras to shed more daylight between the sides.

Lam’s side were then awarded another penalty, which Hankinson easily converted for another two points.

It wasn’t long after until Wigan were adding another try to their collection, as Williams found the space to extend the lead to 38-12 after 65 minutes.

The Giants were able to shorten the Warriors’ lead to 38-22, as Louis Senior and Jordan Turner both went over in the final ten minutes for what were nothing more than consolation tries.

The last bit of action of the game saw both Ukuma Ta’ai for Huddersfield and Willie Isa for Wigan get sent to the sin bin after a late confrontation, before Hankinson missed a subsequent penalty as the game finished 38-22.
