Report
Wigan had the first chance of the game as a knock-on from Huddersfield allowed Meredith to kick through and chase but the Giants wrapped up the ball to deny Wigan the early chance.
From the restart Wigan tried their luck again and this time it paid as Katie Palmer crashed over under immense pressure close to the sticks. Charlotte Meredith added the extras for an early 6-0 lead.
Huddersfield looked to respond a few minutes later as Madison Clegg looked to break down the right edge, but good defence from Erin Osborne saw the winger stopped in her tracks. Clegg did get over the line shortly afterwards though as she got the step on the right side to race away and score. Sant couldn’t add the extras from out wide and it was 6-4 to Wigan.
The Giants got themselves in front on 21 minutes as Sant intercepted a pass deep in her own half to race away and score under the sticks, converting her own effort to put Huddersfield out to 10-6.
Wigan had the final say of the first half though as Emily Coop went over on the right side, with Meredith unable to convert from the touchline it was 10-10 at the turnaround.
Huddersfield had the best chance from the restart as Martha Hodgson looked to burst through the defence but she spilled the ball as the defence made contact and Wigan survived the pressure.
Wigan looked to get themselves back in front as Isabella Gill made a good half break down the right side, but the dart from Mollie Chapman saw her bundled into touch as the Giants held firm and it remained 10-10 going into the final 20 minutes.
Giants scrum-half Tegan Sant looked to cause issues down the middle of the park as she took a step and put in a chip and chase before a big collision saw play halted. With the ball back in play the Giants had a six again but a rushed kick on the last saw Wigan back in possession.
Katie Palmer marked her second of the game to get Wigan back ahead on 45 minutes, a powerful run taking her up to the goal line to crash under the sticks. Charlotte Meredith added the two as Wigan led 16-10.
Isabella Gill had a great chance to extend the lead on 51 minutes as a cut-out pass to the right wing found the interchange but she was bundled into touch as she attempted to get over the line and it remained 16-10 in Wigan’s favour into the final 10 minutes.
Alisha Lawrence was shown a yellow card in the latter stages of the game for a high shot on her own goal line but Wigan saw out the game as Huddersfield knocked on the final play of the game, Wigan confirming the 16-10 victory.
