Women’s Head Coach Denis Betts reflected on a ‘really impressive’ win over Huddersfield Giants on Sunday afternoon as the Warriors maintained a perfect start to 2025.
The Warriors lifted the Challenge Cup a week ago as Denis Betts reflected: “It was really impressive [Today’s win]. Last week, you play at Wembley, you’ve got all your families down there and we’ve been building into that one game from the start of the season and and we came away with a really resounding victory and emotions that get released from it.
“It was important we really enjoyed what we’ve done and the we slowly coming back into this training this week against a tough Huddersfield side at their ground, it’s an artificial surface which we’re not used to playing on so emotionally, it was a real tough one.”
The Warriors scored 10 tries, converting nine whilst also keeping the hosts out in the victory: “To not concede a try – we made some errors and left some tries out there when we had hold the ball, but if you win by 50 points, you’ve done some good stuff. You have to get back into the grind, get back to what’s important and what’s next.
“It goes without saying, I think we all turned up today, they put themselves in a real strong position.”
Betts made a number of changes going into the fixture following a bruising Wembley encounter, but was pleased with the efforts for those who came in: “We’re a really strong squad and the selection into the final was really tough, some girls missed out where it was a really close call but you’ve got to give them more credit as well, what they’ve done is they’ve jumped forward and they’ve come out and played and committed and they just make the side better, they defend strong and that’s what being a squad member is – you’re pushing for the a place in these big games and I thought it was exceptional today.
“Now we’re back into that week on week and what’s nice at the moment is there’s no breaks. So we head into Leigh, then we come into St.Helens, then we come into the Nines competition – we fall into week after week again. So these next eight weeks are week-to-week, which is what the girls want.”
He added: “They want to keep playing, they want to test themselves and it’s just nice that we got a chance to do that now on the back of holding the Challenge Cup trophy and putting some strong performances in. I just thought today was really good.”
Next week Wigan host newly promoted Women’s side Leigh Leopards to Robin Park Arena for the ‘Pride in our Past’ fixture as Betts said: “It’ll be great to see those inspiring the Next Generation, showing that these girls that have gone and trod this path before. If we can put something back into them and show them that the game’s proud of them, we’re proud of them and the girls are playing now because they laid the foundations.”
Wigan Warriors Women are pleased to announce that its upcoming fixture against Leigh Leopards at Robin Park Arena on Sunday 22 June will be the ‘Pride in our Past’ fixture which will celebrate the fantastic Women who have helped shape the game of Rugby League in the Wigan & Leigh Borough.
