Matt Peet has previewed Saturday’s Betfred Super League fixture against Huddersfield Giants at The FLAIR Stadium, Dewsbury.
Before previewing our clash against the Giants, Peet honoured Sir Billy Boston, who today became the first sportsman to receive a knighthood for services to Rugby League.
The Warriors head coach said: “Not just for Billy or Wigan, but for rugby league to get its first knighthood is great news. He’s an iconic figure and name in our Club, and he’s certainly part of the team at Wigan. He has a huge presence and he’s just a really warm character. I’d just describe him as a gentleman, very humble, always up for a laugh, and he’s been very supportive since we’ve been in position.”
Peet added: “There were trailblazers who had to face up to some to conditions and treatment, and let their talent do the talking. Billy certainly falls into that category in terms of being an unstoppable force, no matter what people might have thought of race or class during that time – he let his rugby do the talking.”
Sharing an insight to his side’s preparation for the Giants, Peet said: “Last week was a working week. Some players needed freshening up and resting in some areas, but it gave us a chance to train and work harder before taking the weekend off. We’ve had a good couple of days work this week which we’ll need, as we feel this is an important part of the year.”
On Luke Thompson, Peet said: “He’s still in a little bit of pain. He could play at a push but it’s just whether we decide to take that step just yet or let him heal a bit more before we throw him in.”
Providing an update on Christian Wade, who made his Wigan debut in a Reserves win over Castleford Tigers last week, Peet said: “He won’t play. He’s going to have another game in our Reserves before we reassess. We have to acknowledge Christian is new to rugby league and coming off the back of a long, hard season. It was always agreed we’d freshen him up and accelerate his learning on practice and Reserves games.”
Peet added: “All the skills that made him a success in rugby union are transferrable in terms of his athleticism, the way he carries, and more importantly his attitude to learn quickly. He won a lot of friends with the way he put his hand up to play Reserves last week. I put the option to him and he was very keen. You wouldn’t get many sportsmen who would be so keen to throw themselves into a game with less than a week’s recovery and only one training session – I was impressed.”
Looking ahead to facing Huddersfield, Peet said: “Their league position reflects that they’ve been decimated by injuries with some bad luck. There’s been a lot of games where they’ve been very competitive – particularly in the start – so we’ve got to be prepared for the best of them. We’re really excited about the challenge.”
On playing at Dewsbury, Peet said: “It’s somewhere we haven’t played before [as a group], and whilst it’ll have a different feel, it might bring more energy. [The pitch size] is comparable to our training field and the game we played in Las Vegas, so we’re going to embrace the challenges and opportunities. That’s the way we’re looking at it.”
