Warriors win away at Salford

Match Report as Wigan Warriors win against Salford Red Devils at Salford Community Stadium in Round 13 of Betfred Super League.
Wigan scored four first half tries with two apiece for Jai Field and Jacob Douglas to build up a 22-0 lead at the break at Salford Community Stadium.
Zach Eckersley then got Wigan’s fifth as Kian McDermott was introduced off the interchange bench to make his senior debut and earn heritage number 1137. Adam Keighran extended the lead before Jacob Douglas completed his hat-trick to hit 40-0. Salford got on the board with a converted effort from Nathan Connell but Wigan finished proceedings with an effort from Jack Farrimond.

Wigan looked for a way over early on with Jacob Douglas on the right edge but a well-timed tackle from Sam Hill forced the ball free from the Warriors wingers’ hands as Salford survived the early threat.
Jai Field opened the scoring on 7 minutes, collecting Esan Marsters chip over the top on his own 10m before weaving through to centre field and racing clear of the chasing Jonny Vaughan to go in under the sticks. Adam Keighran added the extras for 6-0.
After a receiving a penalty on Salford’s goal line for offside, Zach Eckersley was held-up but Jacob Douglas extended Wigan’s lead on 15 minutes, receiving a flat pass from Field to glide over on the right edge. From the touchline, Keighran edged the conversion to the right of the posts but it stood 10-0 in Wigan’s favour.
Jai Field added his second of the evening and Wigan’s third just after the half hour, Junior Nsemba sent Adam Keighran away on the right edge before the centre looped a kick back inside for Jai Field to collect and score. Adam Keighran converted to make it 16-0.
Salford had an effort sent to the video referee for a potential penalty try as Jack Farrimond and Jonny Vaughan came together on the left side, but after consulting the footage – it was adjudged there was no penalty and Wigan were back with the ball in hand and Wigan added a fourth on 35 minutes, this time Jack Farrimond racing past the halfway line before finding Jacob Douglas in support who rounded the defence to dive under the sticks. Keighran added the two and it was 22-0.
Salford had their best chance of the game in the second half as Sam Stone looked certain to score but a great tackle from Harry Smith saw the Salford man spill the ball over the line.
Moments later, Wigan then extended their lead as Eckersley and Marshall linked up on the left edge – Marshall getting a pass from Eckersley before returning the favour for his centre to finish off the move. Keighran converted to make it 28-0 as Kian McDermott was introduced to the action for his Senior debut.
Adam Keighran crossed for Wigan’s sixth on 54 minutes, Wigan got a scrum as Joe Shorrocks knocked on in his own half and from the play Harry Smith sent Adam Keighran bursting through the defence to fly in at the right corner. He converted his own score to make it 34-0.
Jacob Douglas completed his hat-trick just after the hour, diving in at the right corner following another scrum play from the Warriors. Keighran slotted over the touchline conversion and it was 40-0.
Salford got a consolation try on 76 minutes as they broke down the field and Joe Shorrocks opened up some space to send Nathan Connell over the whitewash. Chris Hankinson converted the score to make it 40-6 going into the final 3 minutes of the game.
Jack Farrimond had the last say of the game though, backing up another fantastic break down the right edge from Douglas to complete the scoring in front of the travelling Wigan support. Adam Keighran knocked over the conversion to confirm a 46-6 win for the Warriors in Round 13.
