Match Report as Wigan Warriors win against London Broncos to progress to the quarter-final stages of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup.

Wigan ran up a convincing 30-0 advantage in the first half with tries from Mary Coleman, Eva Hunter, Tiana Power, Kaitlin Hilton and first scores in Wigan colours for Emily Veivers and Shaniah Power.

Despite London stepping up their defence efforts in the second half, Wigan crossed for three further tries in the second half with Kaitlin Hilton and Tiana Power doubling their tallies, alongside an effort from Molly Jones to complete the 44-0 victory that sees Wigan top Group D and progress to the Quarter-Final stages.

Report

It took Wigan just 6 minutes to get their noses in front in the game as Mary Coleman opened the scoring, collecting a ball from Remi Wilton to power over close to the sticks, which Jenna Foubister converted for 6-0.

A litany of errors from the Warriors gave London a scrum followed by three consecutive penalties but the hosts couldn’t take advantage as they then spilled the ball themselves and an effort at the line saw Wigan held up.

Denis Betts’ side did capitalise shortly afterwards though, as Tiana Power crashed over on 15 minutes before Eva Hunter slipped the defence on the half way line to round the defence and race under the posts, which Foubister converted for 16-0.

Shaniah Power then extended the lead with a boisterous effort, attacking the line hard to slip the defence, registering her first try for the Club after debuting last weekend. The conversion was off target as Wigan led 20-0.

Wigan added a further two scored before the break as Emily Veivers marked her first try in Cherry & White, collecting a chip over the top to score before Kaitlin Hilton added Wigan’s sixth of the opening half to send the visitors in with a 30-0 headway.

London came out with a great defensive mindset as they penned the Warriors out, but the persistence paid off for Wigan 10 minutes in as Kaitlin Hilton finished off her good attacking form from the first half as she found space out wide to go over for her second of the day. The conversion attempt was short as Wigan made it 34-0.

The Broncos then attempted a short kick-off but the ball ended up in Wigan hands as we got on the attack once more. A hole in the defensive line allowed Molly Jones to burst through, race away and score, with the score converted by Foubister for 40-0.

The final effort of the day came from Tiana Power, making it four tries in two games for the new recruit. The conversion was off target but Wigan sealed the 44-0 victory to see them top Group D and progress to the Quarter-Final stages of the Betfred Women’s Challenge Cup.
