Luke Thompson has reflected on Wigan Warriors’ Betfred Challenge Cup FOURTH ROUND defeat to Hull FC.
Despite first half tries from Zach Eckersley, Jai Field, Junior Nsemba and Liam Farrell, the visitors came from behind at The Brick Community Stadium to knock the Warriors out the competition.
Sharing his initial thoughts post-match, Thompson said: “It’s pretty devasting to be honest – a real sickener. We were up at half time thinking we had the game in a good spot and from there we should have been able to close it out. Unfortunately we didn’t, and Hull FC deserve credit for the way they came back to get the win.”
On where the game was lost, Thompson said: “I’m not sure at the moment, I’ll have to watch it back. There’s a few moments in the game that probably wasn’t us and to concede so many points in the back end it wasn’t acceptable. That’s something we’ll have to look at and fix up very quick.”
When asked if injuries impacted the result, Thompson said: “Obviously the injuries weren’t ideal, but we can’t use that as an excuse. We still had 13-players on the pitch for the full 80 minutes so overall we just need to be better next time.”
Looking ahead to the visit to Leeds Rhinos, Thompson said: “This loss is going to sting us. We’ll have to get our heads together, watch this one back and try to fix up on things in training this week. Leeds will provide another tough test, but we’ll be going there determined to move on.”
