Hull FC 24-28 Wigan, Challenge Cup Final, 1985

Wigan claimed a thrilling victory over Hull FC in what many consider to be the greatest Challenge Cup Final contested in front of 99,801 spectators at Wembley.

Despite falling behind to Kevin James’ try, Wigan built a 22-8 lead after tries from John Ferguson, Brett Kenny, Henderson Gill and Shaun Edwards.

Steve Evans reduced the points difference for Hull FC before Ferguson added his second when he picked up a loose pass to race clear on the wing. A late Hull FC fightback, which saw Gary Divorty and James Leuluai (x2) cut the gap to four points, wasn’t enough as Wigan ended a 20 year wait to once again lift the Challenge Cup.

The Warriors made it three Final wins from three against Hull FC after tries from Iain Thornley and Sam Tomkins gave Shaun Wane’s side further success at Wembley having won the competition in 2011.

Wigan led 6-0 at the break after Thornley opened the scoring mid-way through the half with a neat finish in the corner before Pat Richards added the extras. Richards extended the advantage with two penalties in between heroic defending from Josh Charnley to deny Hull FC points.

The Warriors completed the win in the final minute when S. Tomkins collected Blake Green’s crossfield kick to cut inside and slide over. Richards slotted the kick as Sean O’Loughlin lifted the Club’s 19th Challenge Cup title.
