Challenge Cup record under Peet

Ahead of saturday’s betfred challenge cup tie, we take a look at the warriors’ record in the competition under matt peet.

Since his appointment in 2022, Peet boasts a 92% win rate in the competition which has seen his side lift the trophy twice from three attempts; in 2022 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and 2024 at Wembley Stadium.

The Warriors hold an impressive recent record in the competition with 18 of the current 21 players who have made a Challenge Cup appearance under Peet scoring in the competition. Liam Marshall leads the way with 10 tries which is followed by Bevan French (8) and Jai Field (6).

Peet’s only defeat in the Challenge Cup to date came against Hull KR in 2023 when the Robins struck an extra time drop goal to win in golden point. The Warriors responded the following year with a dominant victory over KR in the semi-final before lifting a 21st title at Wembley Stadium.

2022: Success at Spurs

Peet’s first Challenge Cup tie in charge came against Salford Red Devils at the DW Stadium, where tries from John Bateman, Liam Byrne and Marshall secured a 20-0 win. Field scored a hat-trick in a 36-6 win at Wakefield Trinity in the next round to set up a semi-final against St Helens.

The Warriors raced into a 14-0 lead at Elland Road before St Helens crossed three times in 10 minutes to go 18-14 ahead. Having scored in the first half, Marshall picked up a loose Saints pass to accelerate more than 80m to score with Smith nailing the conversion for a 20-18 victory.

In a historic first Challenge Cup Final at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Marshall was on the end of Smith’s grubber kick to seal a dramatic victory in the final minutes. Huddersfield had cancelled out tries from Smith and Field to lead on three occasions, but the Warriors hit back to seal silverware in Peet’s first season.

2023: Headingley heartbreak

The Warriors began their defence in perfect style as Junior Nsemba scored his first professional try to earn a hard-fought victory at Headingley after Jake Wardle and French’s double saw the Warriors come from behind to knock Leeds Rhinos out.

Despite a sixth minute red card to Kaide Ellis, the Warriors stood firm against the Wolves as tries from Toby King and Abbas Miski sealed progression to a second consecutive semi-final. However, after building a 10-4 lead after Joe Shorrocks’ red card, the Warriors were unable to prevent Hull KR from levelling before Brad Schneider’s drop goal in extra time took the Robins to Wembley.

2024: Winning at Wembley

Heavy victories over Sheffield Eagles and Castleford Tigers – in which the Warriors scored 20 tries – saw Peet’s side progress to back-to-back semi-finals against Hull KR.

The Warriors produced a third dominant performance in the competition to knock out the Robins at Doncaster’s Eco-Power Stadium. Miski and Wardle each scored twice in a 38-6 victory to secure a return to Wembley for the first time since 2017.

Under the famous Wembley arch, the Warriors denied Warrington Wolves silverware on an emotional afternoon as rugby league remembered Rob Burrow CBE. First half tries from Zach Eckersley and French saw Wigan lead 12-2 at the interval before Farrell’s solo break put the game out of reach.

2025:

The Warriors started this year’s Challenge Cup defence in Sheffield against an Eagles side led by Craig Lingard. Wigan scored eight tries through eight different scorers at Olympic Legacy Park to advance to the Fourth Round where they face Hull FC at The Brick Community Stadium.
