Peet: Pleasing win

  • FT | Wigan Warriors 48-18 Huddersfield Giants.

Matt Peet has reflected on his side’s betfred super league win over huddersfield giants at the brick community stadium.

Despite trailing at half time, the Warriors scored 38 unanswered points to earn a third consecutive Super League win.

Reflecting on the result, Peet said: “It was a pleasing win. Huddersfield came to play and we were aware of how strong they’ve been in the first half of games. I liked the way we went about our business and the crowds energy played a big part in lifting us in key moments.”

Commenting on his half time team talk, Peet said: “The players did most the talking. I reminded them that we’d spoken about how Huddersfield go hard in the first half and that a season has many twists and turns – it’s about how we respond. We spoke about how it [being behind] was a good challenge and we wouldn’t get too carried away one way or another.”

On Sam Walters, Peet said: “He works hard, he’s a popular member of the squad, and he’s certainly put his hand up with some good performances in recent weeks. It was always the intention to use him as a middle who can play back-row and at the minute he’s getting more minutes which is good. Now it’s about building and improving.”

Providing an update on Patrick Mago and Abbas Miski, Peet said: “Paddy’s been a bit ill over the last few days and we don’t need much of an opportunity to give Harvie [Hill] a game, who I thought was good. Abbas had a bit of swelling from the flight on an old injury, so again we took the chance to freshen up the squad.”

On the attacking and defensive side to the game, Peet said: “To have success your defence has to be at the cornerstone of what you do. Having some important attacking threat can get you away from teams as well as maintaining a chance of winning when your defence isn’t watertight. I’ll always say you’ve got to have a defence first mindset.”

The Warriors are back in action at The Brick Community Stadium on Saturday 15 March against Hull FC in the Betfred Challenge Cup. Tickets for the tie remain available to purchase from the Ticket Office and online HERE.
