Match Report
A strong start from the Warriors, which restricted Hull FC to any attacking opportunities, was rewarded with a first Super League try of the season after nine minutes. An attack down the left edge created space for Liam Marshall to send a kick inside which Field gathered to ground as Adam Keighran added the extras.
Firm defensive work from the Warriors denied Harvey Barron and Ed Chamberlain before a moment of magic from Bevan French created a second try. Quick passing saw the ball fall into the hands of the stand-off whose cut-out pass allowed Miski to cross in the corner. Despite an unsuccessful kick from the touchline, the Warriors led 10-0 after 25 minutes.
After a stoppage in play due to an injury which forced Ligi Sao to be stretchered off, the Warriors once more threatened the Hull FC defence as Tyler Dupree powered through to 10m out. Tom Forber’s short pass allowed Mago to side-step the tackle before grounding between the sticks as Keighran added the extras.
The Warriors capitalised on a Hull FC knock on to add a fourth try before the break. A powerful carry from Forber took the Warriors to within striking distance as French’s delicate kick over the top was collected by Field to score his second. Keighran’s kick gave Wigan a 22-0 lead at the interval.
The host’s made a strong start to the second half as Barron broke through to race more than 60m before being halted fantastically by Field. The Warriors were penalised within the set as Hull FC worked the ball wide to Lewis Martin to dive over in the corner.
After the video referee denied Liam Farrell a first try of the season, a short drop out attempt from Hull FC fell kindly to Forber, who accelerated over from 10m out. Keighran nailed the conversion to restore the 22-point advantage with 55 minutes on the clock.
An electric piece of play from the Warriors resulted in a fifth try seven minutes later. Field’s perfectly-weighted pass set Marshall free out wide before the winger unselfishly played the ball back inside to Wardle who scored unopposed.
A Hull FC handling error presented the Warriors with a scrum 10m out, as Smith excellently played a reverse pass back inside to Field who sprinted through the gap in the defence to complete his hat-trick. Keighran made no mistake with the kick to widen the score to 40-4 with 12 minutes remaining.
The Warriors wrapped up in the win in style as a lightning break from Keighran down the right wing resulted in the centre finding French on the inside to score. Keighran slotted the extras to give Wigan a 46-4 victory.
