Foundation deliver opportunities to 30,000 individuals

Wigan Warriors Community Foundation are proud to have engaged with more than 30,000 individuals across the north west ahead of our season opener against leigh leopards.
Ahead of tomorrow night’s must-see Betfred Super League Round 1 clash, Wigan Warriors Community Foundation have joined forces with Leigh Leopards, Wigan Athletic and Wigan Council to provide sporting opportunities to many across our Borough.
With support from Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont and CEO Neil Jukes, the Super League opener is set to showcase the best of the Borough on and off the pitch. Key members from each Club spoke at the recent Progress With Unity Summit at The Edge, Wigan, to promote opportunity and inclusion through sport to more than 400 children.
Wigan Warriors and Wigan Athletic owner Mike Danson and Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont drove home the key message of working together to make Wigan Borough a place of ambition, inspiration and opportunity for young people.
Matt Peet, Junior Nsemba, Bevan French and Martin Offiah MBE were also present on stage to express the importance of inclusion and community to the town.
Leader of Wigan Council, Cllr David Molyneux MBE said: “This Borough is a hotbed of talent and we’re incredibly proud of all our athletes and sports clubs and their role in helping to position Wigan as the greatest sporting Borough in the UK.
“I’d like to thank Wigan Warriors Community Foundation for their significant contribution to the community and their commitment to working together to deliver Progress With Unity. This 10-year plan for the Borough will help tackle social, health and financial inequalities, unlocking opportunities, and breaking down barriers to ensure all our towns and communities thrive.”
Having engaged with 136 primary and secondary schools since the start of the month, our Community Foundation coaches have delivered mental health awareness assemblies as part of Children’s Mental Health Week.

In partnership with Rugby League Cares, Community Foundation staff will present its first ‘Ahead of the Game’ workshop at Hawkley Hall High School on Thursday morning. Designed to target young athletes aged 12-18, the youth mental fitness programme focuses on early intervention in mental health, directly addressing anxiety and depression, whilst teaching ways to support struggling peers.
Wigan Warriors Community Foundation and Wigan Athletic Community Trust worked together on Wednesday afternoon to deliver a multi-sports festival to more than 120 children. The session provided children with an opportunity to try out multiple sports alongside individuals from different schools.
Thursday night’s Battle For The Borough clash provides excitement and opportunity for many individuals, who will be encouraged to participate in activities led by Warriors, Latics and Leopards staff.
Building on the success of last season’s pre-match delivery at Robin Park Arena, our popular drills, challenges and interactive stations will return between 6-7:15pm. Warriors and Leopards supporters are encouraged to observe and participate in the pre-match fun!
With the support of community staff from Wigan Athletic and Leigh Leopards, the Warriors will host a complete rugby league festival involving our community teams – Wheelchair, PDRL, LDSL, Touch Rugby, Rugbees – plus more engage in sessions and exhibition matches.
Over at The Brick Community Stadium, and before The Lathums take to the stage, children are encouraged to attend our newly launched Max’s Club – sponsored by Cotton Works. The fun-filled area within the East Stand will provide children with the opportunity to experience a range of activities including: pool table, table football, inflatables and more!
Wigan Warriors Head of Community, Danny Fullerton said: “We are delighted with the incredible impact the Community Foundation team has made in supporting young peoples mental health and well-being.
“Engaging with this amount of people has been inspiring, and we need to keep the collective efforts by working together with Wigan Athletic Community Trust and Leigh Leopards Foundation.”
