Matt Peet has reflected on his side’s pre-season training as attention turns to betfred challenge cup third round action.
The Warriors have completed a week-long camp at Tenerife Top Training – a High Performance Centre – as preparations intensified ahead of the first competitive fixture of 2025.
On the camp, Peet said: “The main goal wasn’t to get the lads fit and strong but instead to focus on rugby, culture and our connection. We’ve had another brutal British winter back home, but long days in the Tenerife sun has allowed us to catch up on sessions we missed when training indoors.
“We said in a meeting on Saturday evening that if we could hit the targets we wanted to on the final day, then we’d go home content. These training camps take a lot of planning and you have goals and visions for how you want them to run – going home satisfied is rewarding.”
Praising the ‘superb’ facilities, which hosts more than 250 sporting teams each year, Peet added: “The complex has everything plus more that an elite athlete would want. Local teams have been milling around the place which has brought a freshness and energy to each day. This is another part of our evolution as a team and it’s important we do things right to improve the group.”
Reflecting on the Warriors’ pre-season friendlies against Oldham and Leeds Rhinos, Peet said: “The main thing we took from those friendlies was the physical work. Leeds was a real arm-wrestle which took us beyond what we’ve done physically in practice. We’re always learning and each player has given me something to think about in their own way.”
Looking ahead to Friday night’s Challenge Cup Third Round tie against Sheffield Eagles, Peet said: “Tenerife has been a great place to finish pre-season and I’m sure the lads will have a spring in their step when we face a hungry Sheffield team. There’s always an excitement when competitive fixtures come around and I’m sure the players will respond.”
Following Friday night’s Challenge Cup tie at Sheffield, the Warriors kick off the 2025 Betfred Super League season with the Greatest Opening Night against Leigh Leopards at The Brick Community Stadium.
Alongside the Leopards and Wigan Athletic, the Warriors will honour and celebrate the incredible communities in the borough which includes an aim to raise more than £1m of products (food, supplies etc) for its sponsored charities by completing activities surrounding the contest.
Praising the initiative, Peet said: “It’s an exciting initiative that falls in line with everything we want to be about. We hope our town and supporters will feel proud about the difference we can make to so many lives. The bond we share with Wigan Athletic and Leigh is powerful in affecting change in our town. There’s also two brilliant games at the heart of the initiative.”
