Rigby: Proud as punch

Adam Rigby has reflected on captaining England Wheelchair to a 58-28 victory over Spain in nantes, france.

The 32-year-old, who has lifted Wheelchair World Cups in 2008 and 2022, received the honour of captaining his country for the first time in the international clash on Thursday evening.

Sharing his pride following the win, Rigby said: “I’m proud as punch to have captained that team – it’s beyond any dreams I could have had as a kid.”

Reflecting on the performance, Rigby said: “It’s a game of momentum and late in the first half that was with Spain. But we had a good chat in the changing room about getting back to our process, and the second half was a much better performance.”

Praising Wigan teammate Jack Heggie, who scored a hat-trick and eight goals on his first England appearance since 2014, Rigby said: “Jack will be so chuffed with the way he’s come back into the team after such a long time. He was great today and so was Joe Coyd – but I also want to credit Jason Owen, Tristan Norfolk and Chris Haynes on their debuts.”

England will be aiming to extend their winning run on Saturday afternoon when they take on rivals France in Saint Lo (4pm K.O.).
