Dupree: Degree the cherry on top

Wigan Warriors forward Tyler Dupree has described graduating from university as the ‘cherry on top’ of an incredible season.

Within weeks of helping the Warriors complete the Grand Slam at the Theatre of Dreams, Dupree accomplished a feat he’d describe as ‘impossible’ during his childhood.

After three years studying Applied Sports Performance at the University Centre at the Heart of Yorkshire Education Group, Dupree graduated with a degree earlier this month.

“It’s such a proud feeling,” Dupree said. “Graduating with a degree is something I never thought would happen as a child so to be able to share this moment with the whole family is just surreal.”

Having started the course whilst at Salford Red Devils, Dupree has continued his studies at the Warriors which involved completing two hours each day after training.

“It was tough, especially through pre-season,” Dupree said. “There were times I wanted to pack things in and just focus on playing but my post-rugby career is important to me so I knew I had to stick with it. To achieve this accomplishment at the end has made all the tough times worth it.”

With the next phase of Warriors set to begin pre-season work in the upcoming weeks, Dupree has shared details of the intense training programme he has endured throughout the off-season.

“I asked the question ‘what can I do more’ to make sure I stay at the top,” Dupree said. “I had one week off when I went on holiday but other than that I’ve been training everyday to make sure I return in the best possible shape.

“It’s been hard but my aim is to return with high levels of fitness to give myself a strong starting base for the season. Last year was fantastic with all the trophies but to get the personal accolade in my degree earlier this month was the cherry on top.”
