Wigan Warriors can confirm that Youth Performance Coach Joel Tomkins will leave the Club at the end of the 2024 season to take up a Coaching Opportunity.
Joel Returned to Wigan earlier in the season as Youth Performance Coach and has been head coach of the Scholarship team and assisting with the Academy. Tomkins, who played 237 games for Wigan, has been offered a coaching opportunity within the Super League that he feels is right for his personal development as a coach.
The 37 year-old has been responsible for coaching the players of the future and passing on his knowledge gained over a fantastic playing career which included a spell in rugby union with Saracens. He has worked hard in this role to develop his own coaching and help the young players at the club develop their skills. As a former Wigan Academy player who progressed through the system, the two-time Super League winner has been able to use this knowledge to help guide the current young warriors developing along the club’s academy system.
Wigan Warriors chief Executive, Kris Radlinski said: “Joel has made a real impact in a short space of time. An opportunity has arisen which he feels he has to take. We wish him well on the next stage of his personal evolution and leaves with our very best wishes.“
Joel Tomkins said: “A year ago, I was working for Greater Manchester Fire Service, and I want to thank Matty and Kris for bringing me back into the World of rugby league. Their belief and support has reignited my passion for the sport and inspired me to pursue a coaching career.
“During my time working with the youth system at Wigan Warriors, I’ve built some strong connections, and I look forward to crossing paths with many of the talented players I’ve had the privilege to work with in the future.
Catalans Dragons present a fantastic opportunity for me to further my coaching career, and after spending two seasons there, I know that they are a fantastic club which is striving for success and I feel that I can contribute to the club achieving their goals.”
The club want to thank Joel for his contribution this season and wish him all the best in his new coaching position.
