Matt Peet praised his side as Wigan Warriors beat Leigh Leopards 38-0 to reach the Betfred Super League Grand Final.

Liam Marshall and Sam Walters each scored twice in the win as further tries from Bevan French and Jai Field mean the Warriors will face Hull KR at Old Trafford.

Reflecting on the win, Peet said: “With semi-finals the result is the most important thing. I’m proud of the way the players applied themselves in what was a balanced, controlled and disciplined performance. It was a job well done for large parts and to get the opportunity we have ahead of us is really exciting.”

On the performance, Peet said: “To defend like that in a semi-final is always encouraging. I liked the fact we looked controlled defensively, but also the way we expressed ourselves with the ball.”

On Bevan French, Peet said: “He’s one of the reasons there’s a big crowd and eyes on the game. He’s got skill and flair but also great instincts and courage to implement that play. Trust is the big one for Bevan as he knows the players around back him to express himself. You want players to look like they’re enjoying themselves and Bevan has put a smile on peoples faces despite such an intense game.”

Providing an update on Liam Farrell, who missed the clash with a virus, Peet said: “With Liam it was important with the nature of his virus that he undergoes the right tests before we put him into such an intense match. We’ll do the right thing for Liam and hopefully he comes through the tests in a good place and he can play next week.”

Praising Sam Walters, who scored twice in the victory, Peet said: “I can’t credit Sam enough for the way he’s acted, even when he’s not been playing. He wasn’t originally playing but his response in training and team meetings was brilliant. It gives you confidence as a coach and tonight he was outstanding. He scored twice but he also did a lot of the tough stuff really well – credit to him.”

On reaching the Grand Final, Peet said: “It’s going to be a pleasure to be involved off the back of what has been a flagship weekend for Super League which is credit to hard work at a lot of Clubs. Next week can be a real celebration of not just Wigan and Hull KR, but the competition.”

Reflecting on three seasons as head coach, Peet said: “I’m enjoying it. I’m grateful for the opportunity and the people I have around me which has made it an enjoyable three years. Each day I come in and have a lot of fun whilst working out and trying to improve. Whatever role you’re in at the Club it’s a great place to work – mine’s one that gets attention, but anyone here at the moment feels part of something special.”
