- FT | Wigan Warriors 22-4 Hull FC.
Matt Peet spoke to the press following our Betfred Super League win over Hull FC at the brick community stadium.
Four tries from four Academy graduates – Jacob Douglas, Zach Eckersley, Junior Nsemba and Jack Farrimond – sealed the two points for the Warriors.
Reflecting on the win, Peet said: “It’s a job done and we can move forwards healthy. There’s so much more in us and although we’ve got to improve, that’s what we’re striving towards. It’s worth recognising as well that we had a very young team out so I understand why there were some inconsistencies at times.”
On the impact from the Academy products, Peet said: “It’s brilliant. We’re fortunate that we have so many people working hard in our pathway not just in Wigan but across the north west.”
Speaking on Douglas, who marked his home debut with his first Betfred Super League try, Peet said: “He’s been working hard and deserved his shot. He was industrious at yardage, he carried strong, he fielded kicks well and it was nice that he got his try as well. I’m pleased for him.”
Peet added: “I scouted Dougie and Zach when they were a left edge combination at U13’s. They’ve always been good lads who have a strong chemistry together. I can remember some of the games I watched so it’s amazing how things have turned out – it’s surreal.”
On Liam Marshall, who captained the Warriors on his 200th career appearance, Peet said: “We are very proud of Liam who is a big part of what we do. He’s part of our leadership team so he knew it was coming but to be able to tell him that he’d be captain this week was a privilege.”
Speaking on his squad, Peet said: “When I reflect on the season we’ve had to change the team around a lot and blood a few players in new positions and combinations. It does give me confidence that should we get hit with something else later in the season, that we can now fall back on familiar things. One good thing to come of it is that I’m confident in our 30-man squad.”
