Matt Peet spoke to the press on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s Betfred Super League fixture at home to Hull FC.

The Warriors will be looking to build on their victory from Magic Weekend, where they beat St Helens 20-0 to stay level on points with Hull KR at the top of the Betfred Super League table going into Round 23.

Pleased with the win, Peet said: “I think it was a physical game – one that if we didn’t get the start right could’ve easily gone in a different direction, but I thought we were excellent at the start. We were very controlled, but played with a decent amount of ball movement.

“There was times in the game when we turned the ball over cheaply, but credit to St Helens for that. I just liked the way we responded to those tougher periods in the game, so it’s a positive step and we’ve got to build on that now.”

Reflecting on a difficult run of games, Peet said: “I think with the fixture congestion and the fact that everything didn’t go our way, the lads had to show a lot of physical and mental resilience, and I was really proud with the way they applied themselves.

“It was nice to see them get a decent performance at the weekend and they seem really keen to build on that.”

As for this week’s opponents, the Warriors faced Hull FC last month at the MKM Stadium, where, despite a late comeback effort, Peet’s side fell to a 24-22 defeat.

“They beat us to the punch that day and they were excellent for large parts of the game”, said Peet. “This sport doesn’t get played on paper. It’s all about the battle of will, effort and energy – if you lose that, you’ll lose the game, particularly against teams in the same division. No game is a foregone conclusion, that’s for sure.”

On the Black and Whites, he added: “They’re a team who compete hard. I think what Simon (Grix) has done is made them more resilient – they’ve had a lot to come up against this year when you look at the amount of different players they’ve had to play, so their year has brought up all sorts of challenges.

“The fact is that on their given day, as they’ve already proved against us, they’ve got the quality and determination to get results.”

Looking ahead to the final five games of the season, Peet said: “I just want to see us be us, really. We’ve got an identity and a set of values that we hold highly. When we commit to that, play with a smile on our face, work hard for one another and look like a collected team, we’re a tough game for anybody.”

With four of those five remaining taking place at The Brick Community Stadium – including this weekend – he added: “We’re excited about it, we love playing at home. Our supporters have been with us all through the year, but obviously we’ve not had as consistent games at home as we would’ve liked, as they would’ve liked.

“So, I love the idea of the supporters getting excited about the back end of the year and getting behind the team, and we’ve got a duty to deliver performances.”

All remaining tickets for the regular Betfred Super League season are on sale now at The Brick Community Stadium Ticket Office (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm) and online HERE.
