Walters: Great team performance

Sam Walters gave his thoughts following the Warriors 20-0 victory over St Helens at Magic Weekend.

Walters made his fourth starting appearance of the season after a late injury concern for Liam Farrell saw Walters replace the Captain in the starting line-up at Elland road. On the late change, he said: “It was unexpected circumstances for myself, I was initially on the bench but with Faz [Liam Farrell] pulling out in the warm-up I was next in. I knew that I needed to start well and obviously the ultimate aim is to be starting every week so I have to put my best foot forward when I do get an opportunity like today.”

The towering forward also scored his first try in Wigan colours on the day: “I’ve bottled a few already so it feels like a long time coming,” Walters said in jest.

He added: “It’s nice to get over for one but it was a great team performance, everyone 1-18 turned up for each other and wraps to Paddy [Mago] as well for stepping up from 18th man and doing a great job as well.”

Reflecting on the 20-0 victory over St Helens on Saturday afternoon, Walters said: “I thought it was a great team performance, especially after the last few weeks where we’ve had areas of improvement. I think we just stripped it back to what we’re good at today which is defending and turning the ball over – little effort areas for each other.

“We just need to keep building now on the back of this performance.”

The Warriors now have an 8-day turnaround before facing Hull FC, a vital term of preparation after a handful of short turnarounds in recent weeks. Speaking on using the time wisely, Walters added: “It’s important that we take the time now to refresh but also get a good week of training in as well, that can really put you in good stead going into another game so we’ll review this game and then it’s all eyes on Hull next week and keeping some momentum going.”
