Match Report as Wigan Warriors win 20-0 against St helens at Magic Weekend.

The Warriors were forced into a late change prior to kick-off as Liam Farrell dropped out, to be replaced by Sam Walters in the starting line-up with the Warriors 18th player Patrick Mago coming onto the bench.

It was a promising first half for the Warriors who ran up a 14-point lead with scores from Liam Marshall and a moment of brilliance from Jack Farrimond with Adam Keighran knocking over three goals. Sam Walters crossed late in the second half to extend Wigan’s lead as the Warriors kept St Helens to nil.

Report

It was an even start to the contest at Elland Road with both sides seeing out sets but it was Wigan who crossed first after 15 minutes. A great half-break from Jake Wardle saw his ankles tapped before Wigan were handed a fresh set of six, after running the ball close a great cut-out pass from Keighran found Liam Marshall on the wing to ease over. Keighran added the two and it was 6-0 Wigan.

Just four minutes later Jack Farrimond doubled the lead with an audacious effort, sending a grubber through and collecting himself to dive over in front of the Warriors fans. Adam Keighran slotted the extras to make it 12-0.

Just before the half-time hooter Wigan got a six again call for holding down on Junior Nsemba before Saints were immediately penalised for offside. With seconds left on the clock, Adam Keighran was handed the tee as he slotted over a two-pointer to see Wigan in with the 14-0 advantage.

St Helens looked to get over the line in the second half as a penalty got them past half way but after playing out the set the kick on the last from Moses Mbye was straight into the arms of Jack Farrimond to recover the possession and get Wigan back on the attack.

The Warriors had a third effort denied by the video referee as a testing ball to the corner from Adam Keighran saw Zach Eckersley over the whitewash but the score was chalked off for a knock-on from Abbas Miski and it remained 14-0 in Wigan’s favour going into the final 25 minutes.

Kaide Ellis was shown a yellow card on 55 minutes for head contact with Joe Batchelor and with Saints getting an attacking set Wigan did well to see out the tackles and get the ball back close to their own goal line as Vaughan ran into trouble on the final.

Shortly afterwards Harry Robertson made a break before getting an inside ball to Matt Whitley but an outstanding tackle from Jai Field saw Matt Whitley lose the ball over the line as Wigan scrambled well to keep the clean sheet.

Both sides continued to searched to break the second half deadlock and it was Wigan who did so five minutes before the end as Sam Walters got on the end of a kick through from Abbas Miski to power over and confirm the victory for the Warriors. Adam Keighran added the two to make it 20-0 in an emphatic win for the Warriors at magic.
