- Leeds Rhinos v Wigan Warriors, Saturday 10 August, 3pm K.O.
Matt Peet spoke to the press on Friday afternoon ahead of Wigan Warriors’ Round 21 Betfred Super League game away to Leeds Rhinos.
After returning to the top of the Betfred Super League table with a home victory over Leigh Leopards on Tuesday night, the Warriors will be looking to continue their winning form in Saturday’s trip to West Yorkshire where they face Leeds Rhinos – a third fixture in 10 days for Peet’s side.
On recovery throughout the busy period, which included a cryotherapy session straight after Tuesday night’s win, Peet said: “We’re in a fortunate position that the Club support us and provide so much terms of resource for these lads.
“We’ve trained today and the boys seem good. We’ve had to be smart about what we do and what we don’t do. It’s all about having energy tomorrow at three o’clock and that’s what we’ll be aiming for.”
Saturday will mark the Warriors’ first meeting in 2024 with the Rhinos, who last month appointed Brad Arthur as their head coach until the end of the season. Arthur has taken charge of three matches so far, with his first win coming away to Huddersfield Giants before losing to Salford Red Devils last time out.
On the opposition, Peet said: “There’s no doubt that Brad Arthur is instilling an attitude to defend on the front foot and to finish sets well and build a game through applying pressure.
“Every time I’ve lined up against a Leeds side they’ve had exciting athletes across the back line, and that’s no different this week. It’s a dangerous game, no doubt.”
On making the trip to AMT Headingley Rugby Stadium, Peet said: “I love going to Headingley – it’s one of the premier venues in rugby league. There’s always an exciting crowd with proud and passionate fans. I’m looking forward to it.
“They’re just one of the elite clubs in Super League. I think they strike a good balance of recruiting good overseas players and producing quality homegrown talent that often goes on to play international.”
Having been rested against Leigh, full-back Jai Field has been included in Peet’s 21-man squad to face Leeds, as he continues to build up to full match-fitness following a period on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.
“It was always the plan that three games in 10 days would have been dangerous after so long out, it would’ve been a big spike in his load of work”, said Peet. “So, we had a choice to make if he played in game number two or games number one and three, and we chose number three – that’s why he didn’t play on Tuesday.”
Tickets for tomorrow’s clash against Leeds Rhinos can now only be purchased from the AMT Headingley Stadium Ticket Office. Tickets permit entry to our Reserves clash against the Rhinos which kicks off at 12pm.
