Women’s Head Coach Denis Betts has reflecting on his side’s recent results whilst look ahead to Sunday’s tie against Huddersfield Giants.

Two weeks ago the Warriors recorded a great victory on the road against York Valkyrie, their first win over that opposition since 2019. Reflecting on his first season in charge of the Women’s team so far, Betts said: “When we sat down at the beginning of the year we weren’t talking about winning the competition and beating every side, we were talking about being competitive. We showed that over games like Leeds in the Challenge Cup Semi-Final, the recent game against St Helens in League competition – so to go to York with a real strong mindset and get the result was justified.”

The Warriors Women also added a trophy to their success on the field in 2024 as they were crowned Champions at the recent Nines Finals at Hull KR’s Sewell Group Craven Park. On the Nines tournament, he said: “The Nines has been a really good tournament for us. We had a chance through the early rounds to have a look at a lot of our talented younger girls so we took quite a large squad for the qualifiers which showed some of the ability and talent that we have available.

“They got to the final last year and it was a bit of unfinished business for the girls. We worked really hard, we’re in a good place and the week before we had a good win away at York which gave us some confidence going into the Nines and our ambition showed in the way that we played.”

Betts added: “It’s a little bit of payback for how hard they’ve worked. Sometimes you can play well and lose but we’ve put ourselves in a situation where the top games are what we’re after and there was a trophy on the line in the Nines and if you play for this Club you’ve got to compete and try and win it.”

This week the Warriors face Huddersfield Giants at Heywood Road, Sale with the Cherry & Whites running out 102-0 winners in their previous meeting at John Smith’s Stadium.

Despite the result last time out, the Warriors Head Coach remained grounded and doesn’t expect the same result this time around: “It was just a really good day for us. They had a bad day, we had a really good day and I don’t think it’ll be that kind of scoreline again on Sunday afternoon. I’m expecting us to turn up with a lot of ambition and determination and get a result.”

He added: “It’s a coaching cliché but we are taking every game as it comes, we have to remain competitive and we’ve got some big tests to come before the end of the season so we are going to have to be at our best. At the minute we’re in that top four and the idea is to finish as high as possible then we’re one game away from being in a final.”
