In Memoriam: Brian Ramsdale

It is with great sadness that Wigan Warriors learned of the passing of former player BrIAN Ramsdale aged 73 following a long-term illness.

Brian was born on 26 September 1950 at Billinge Hospital, living locally in Ince, and signed for Wigan straight from school joining the Colt’s junior set up.

Brian made his Wigan debut on the 6 December 1969 in a 20-5 defeat against Hull Kingston Rovers at the old Central Park ground, which secured his unique Heritage Number 671.

Unfortunately, Brian’s talents playing as a second-row forward, were somewhat limited as he was competing with established internationals such as Bill Ashurst, Dave Robinson, and Eddie Cunningham not forgetting recognised stalwarts Kevin O’Loughlin and Geoff Fletcher which regrettably reduced his first-team appearances to eight.

Like most Wigan players at the time Brian served his apprenticeship playing in the Wigan Colts, and Wigan A team before his first team debut.

Brian’s final game for Wigan was a loss against Leeds at Headingley, on 14 October 1972 by 58-3.

On retiring from the professional game Brian established himself as a Chartered Surveyor and Building Consultant and founded his own company.

Although Brian made eight appearances for Wigan’s first team as a local lad he achieved his ambition of wearing the Cherry and White shirt and playing at Central Park.

Brian kept in touch with rugby league after his playing career by regularly attending Wigan games before his illness and he became involved in the Wigan Past Players Association for many years.

Brian and his company also sponsored the Riversiders Supporters Club end-of-season dinner for several years.

Brian, you will be sadly missed by your rugby colleagues and friends.

Wigan Warriors send their condolences to Brian’s wife Anne, along with his family and friends at this sad time.
