- Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves, Friday 26th June, 8pm K.O.
Matt Peet spoke to the press ahead of Friday’s Betfred Super League top of the table clash against Warrington Wolves at the brick community stadium.
The Warriors will be looking to bounce back from a narrow defeat at Hull FC in Round 18 of Betfred Super League action, as they return to The Brick Community Stadium to face Warrington Wolves.
Reflecting on the Warriors’ first loss since April, Peet said: “We don’t get too excited when we play well or when we have good days, and equally, although it hurt at the weekend, we look forward to learning and responding. That’s what we’re focused on.
“In every game of rugby league the start is critical. There’s so many things you have to get right at the start – the basics – from which you can build the game off the back of it. Clearly last week we didn’t do that well and I think us and Warrington will be looking to do that this week.”
On playing in front of the Wigan home support this Friday, Peet said: “There’s a real energy about the town at the moment. I feel our last two home games against Leigh and St Helens, there’s been a fantastic feeling around the stadium, the Fan Village and the town.
“Our fans have liked the way we’ve been performing and with recent things going on in the town, it just feels like there’s a bit of momentum at the moment. I hope our players put in a quality performance to get our fans into the game as Warrington will contribute to a great atmosphere as well.”
Wigan face Warrington for a third time this season having played once at the Halliwell Jones Stadium and once in the Betfred Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in which the Warriors came out victors on both occasions.
On this week’s opponents, who sit two points behind the Warriors in the league table, Peet said: “We just know they’re a quality outfit. We saw in the first fixture that they’ve got that strength in depth, and I feel the young players that have come into their squad have taken their squad to another level in terms of depth.
“It seems that whatever players put on that Warrington shirt play with a real commitment on both sides of the ball and obviously they’ve got some star talent as well. We look forward rather than back and we know we’ve got a massive challenge ahead of us.”
Peet added: “I always feel that if a team defends really well and they’ve got talented players then they’re in with a chance of every game they’re playing in, and that’s why Warrington are having such success this year.”
