Match Report as Wigan Warriors Wheelchair Reserves beat Halifax Panthers Wheelchair Reserves at Robin Park Leisure Centre on Saturday morning.
A scintillating start by the Warriors helped them open up an 18-0 lead, with tries by Toby Burton-Carter, Dan Dutson, and Mark Williams. The third of those tries was the pick of the bunch with Dutson and Tom Welch showing excellent handling skills to put Williams in at the corner. Having scored the first, Burton-Carter also converted all three tries.
The Panthers were next on the scoreboard, Finlay O’Neill hitting the gap and evading the tacklers on his way to the line.
Having only been on the court for a matter of minutes, Leila Hamrang was given space out wide and was able to cross the line after receiving the pass from Dutson, marking her first try for the Club.
In the final moments of the half, the home side defence switched off to allow O’Neill to register his second. Similarly to his earlier try, he was unable to add the extras, therefore, the score was 24-8 at the break in favour of the Warriors.
It was ‘Fax who started the second half the stronger, scoring two further tries to reduce the deficit to just 4 points. A try from Nathaniel Wright, plus a penalty try for Jack Stockton, helped set up a tense final quarter.
Taking their opponent’s comeback in their stride, Wigan regained composure and aimed to come home with a wet sail. Playing the ball at speed, Welch was able to gift Dutson an easy score, with the defence nowhere to be seen.
Doubling his tally, Burton-Carter was the beneficiary of more slick handling and was able to loop around the outside of the defence to score in the left corner.
Sealing the win, Welch initially crashed over the try line to add his name to the scoresheet, before slotting over the conversation, via the crossbar, to take the final score to 40-20 to the Warriors.
