Match Report as Wigan Warriors Wheelchair were beaten by Halifax Panthers Wheelchair at Robin Park Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoon.
Getting off to a great start, Jack Heggie was the first to score when he spotted a gap in the defensive line. He was also able to convert the try for a 6-0 lead within the opening minute.
Quick to hit back, Halifax tied the scores when Wayne Boardman was able to cross the line, with Rob Hawkins slotting over the kick.
Next up, some electric handling by Heggie and Phil Roberts allowed Wigan to create an overlap that saw Adam Rigby score in the left corner. Heggie again converting.
Unfortunately, directly from the kick off, ‘Fax were in again when a Boardman kick was expertly collected by Harry Brown inches from the touchline. Once he had the ball in his hands, he was able to race away and score.
After a period of tight defence, Nathan Roberts was the next on the scoresheet when he was able to score from close range. Adding the extras again, Heggie made it 18-10 to the Warriors.
Having been edged out by Wigan, the Away side went on a run of scoring. Despite an excellent last gasp tackle by Nathan Roberts stopping them initially, the next play saw ‘Fax score through Jeremy Bourson.
Using their agility and chair skills, the Panthers followed the Bourson try with one from Hawkins. The conversion from Boardman giving the away side the lead for the first time. Scoring his second, Brown was able to increase the lead further and give his side a 4-point buffer.
Looking to keep the scores tight, Heggie added another 6 points when he was able to swerve and evade a tackle to the right of the posts. The try and kick tied the scores at 24 a piece.
Despite having only taking the lead late in the half, Halifax were able to score once more, this time through Joe Calcott, to take a 30-24 lead into the break.
In the second half Brown completed his hat-trick and there was only one further Wigan try to celebrate. That honour fell to Nathan Roberts, who was the beneficiary on the back of some slick handling from his teammates and a final pass from his dad, Phil Roberts.
After Bourson and Hawkins doubled their tallies, plus one from Tom Martin, the second half was all about one man. Harry Brown went on to register three further tries, making it 6 for the afternoon, and seal a 68-30 win for Halifax Panthers.
Next up for the Warriors, it’s a home tie versus London Roosters on Saturday 27th July.
