Wigan were first on the board but Saints responded well to build-up a 20-6 lead at the break. Another try for the Warriors in the second half got Wigan into double figures but it was only a consolation as the visitors scored five tries in return in the second forty to go home with a big win.
Report
Wigan opened the scoring on 10 minutes as Jacob Douglas broke away on the overlap before getting a pass back inside for Noah Hodkinson to go over. Nathan Lowe converted the effort to make it 6-0.
It was 10 minutes later before St Helens got on the board, George Whitby sold a dummy to slip between the defence and crash over. Roberts converted and it was all level at 6-6 after the first quarter of the game.
St Helens threatened a second score a few minutes later as a teasing ball towards the uprights was put dead by Wigan for a Goal Line drop out. The ball saw Saints start the set inside Wigan territory though as the visitors took the lead, a short pass allowing Whitby to ease over. Roberts converted again for 12-6.
Saints scored again on the half hour as a penalty was awarded 10 meters from the Wigan line to give the visitors a full attacking set from close range. A looping ball out wide was cut back inside to see Bennison reach out an arm and extend the lead. Roberts was off target as it stood 16-6.
In the dying embers of the first half, a ball fired out to the left wing allowed Saints to cross once again, flying in at the corner for an unconverted try to make it 20-6 at the turnaround.
In similar fashion to the first half, it was the Warriors were first on the board in the second forty. A fantastic break in the build-up from Harry Higham got Wigan into the opposition half and after a few tackles, a great looping pass to the left edge saw Jacob Douglas go over and reduce the difference to 10-points.
At 20-10, the traffic turned one way as St Helens got a quickfire double under the sticks to add another 12-points to their tally. The first, a running play from dummy half saw two great offloads come off to put Saints in under the sticks before a spot of fortune saw a pass kicked through from the visitors before ball was knocked forward by Wigan – with a restart, Buckley was sent crashing onto a ball and it was 32-10.
Five minutes later and St Helens were in again, a kick on the last meant Saints had a return of the ball from the half-way line and a quick thinking pass to the wing saw Dagnall ease away for another try. The score was converted as St Helens found themselves 38-10 ahead.
The lead was extended in the 72nd minute as a high kick to the corner was contested between the opposite wingers but it was Anderson who was successful in the air to collect and put the ball down, with the score converted to make it 44-10.
The Derby spoils went to St Helens who got a final converted effort in the dying minutes. Harry Higham went close before the follow up play saw a Wigan pass intercepted, with Dagnall racing all the way to score between the post pads and confirming a 50-10 win for the away side.
