Matt Peet praised his side following Wigan Warriors’ 16-12 victory over St Helens at The Brick Community Stadium.

The Warriors twice came from behind to defeat St Helens as Jake Wardle, Adam Keighran and Zach Eckersley crossed for tries.

Speaking on the performance, Peet said: “Both teams delivered as they always do. I was sat there thinking this could go either way as it was such a good game which seemed to get more intense as it went on – it was physical, fast, full of skill and it drama.”

Praising Eckersley’s performance, Peet said: “It’s credit to Zach for being confident and level-headed on what was a big night in which he stood up. He looked really assured whilst playing tough and delivering.”

Peet added: “We have an educational programme here which teaches players about the Club, the past and our values. Part of that involves picking a player from the past to connect with and look up to and Zach chose Dean Bell. Zach wasn’t due to play whilst Dean was the guest of honour but fate produces its storyline sometimes.”

On the rotation to the playing style, Peet said: “It’s been a crazy week as we had to solve the initial problem of not having a dummy-half and just when we thought we’d worked on that Bevan pulled his hamstring. It was just a great challenge for us. Credit to Tommy and Lockers who came up with the plan and also to Liam Farrell who done an outstanding job.”

Providing an update on Bevan French, Peet said: “He’s in a positive frame of mind. It’s a grade two hamstring so we are looking at around eight weeks. We will learn a lot about ourselves playing without him as we did tonight without Jai, Brad and Kruise. The fundamentals of how to win are not about star players but the culture.”

Praising the middles, Peet said: “Certain games revolve around who you need on the field. The lads involved in the rotates did a good job when they came on of carrying and defending strong. Kaide’s role was to do more ball playing so it was important that we kept him on the field, Luke Thompson covered the left back role when Liam Farrell went into nine and Ethan [Havard] is one of those players that the longer he plays the better he plays. I thought tonight was a great battle down the middle.”

The Warriors return to action at The Brick Community Stadium on Friday 26 July against Warrington Wolves. Tickets can be purchased now from The Brick Community Stadium Ticket Office and online HERE.
