Liam Farrell has expressed the importance of Friday night’s derby against St Helens at The Brick Community Stadium.
Looking ahead to the clash, Farrell said: “Derbies are always intense games no matter what. It’s not going to be the big plays that win the game, it will be all the small efforts so it’s important that we start well to give ourselves the best chance of winning. We had a tough game against Leigh which prepared us and I’m looking forward to this one which I’m sure will go up a notch again.”
On St Helens, Farrell said: “Saints losing their last two matches will add more motivation and intensity to the game as I’m sure they will be coming here wanting to put a performance in against us. It’s a really big game for them but it’s also a really big game for us.”
Sharing his derby memories, Farrell said: “I’ve had some really good times but also some really bad times. Derbies are the games you looked forward to playing in as a kid. This game in isolation is unbelievably important to both towns, fans and Clubs.”
On his match-winning try against St Helens in 2011, Farrell said: “I thought it would die off after a few years but it’s stuck around. It’s a very special moment for myself but obviously a lot of fans in the town love it as well.”
Speaking on Dean Bell, who will be the guest of honour at tomorrow’s clash, Farrell said: “Dean brought me into the Scholarship system so I’ll always be very grateful that he gave me the opportunity. He’ll always be respected as he captained the Club through an illustrious time and I look forward to seeing him on Friday night.”
On the announcement that Wigan Warriors will face Warrington Wolves in Las Vegas in 2025, Farrell said: “It’s very exciting and all the lads were pleased when we found out. I’ve always been a fan of trying to expand our game and it will be a very special occasion for us playing in Las Vegas. Hopefully we can get a lot of Wigan fans on board I’m sure it will be one for the memory bank once I’ve finished playing.”
